Massage therapy does more than just relax the body and calm the mind. Regular treatments are an important part of a wellness plan. Massage addresses the wear and tear of daily life, providing much needed soft-tissue and muscular help. Regular massages help you do more of what you love. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, a stay-at-home parent, or a hard-working professional, your daily grind adds stress to your body.
It’s not about the number of clients we see, it’s about helping to restore quality of life and optimum performance for your needs and lifestyle. We listen to your needs because we care, and work with you to develop the most appropriate treatment plan. We are passionate about what we do and delivering results where others have failed.
Our massage therapists can assess your needs so you get the perfect massage therapy you'll love. From body mapping trigger points and Myofascial Release, to deep tissue, cupping, and relaxation massage, we have the expert knowledge for your needs.
Our ultimate goal at Optimum Performance Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork is to help your body heal and return you to a better quality of life. Depending on your specific condition, our massage therapists may use several different massage modalities to focus on your areas of discomfort. These modalities may include; Swedish techniques, deep tissue, myofascial release, myoskeletal alignment techniques, muscle energy techniques, trigger point therapy, assisted stretching, and kinesiology taping.
Massage therapy dates back to 3000 BCE or earlier. Swedish massage was invented in the 1830's and brought to the US in the 1850's. Swedish massage is a whole-body therapeutic massage treatment that manipulates the soft tissues and muscles to help restore health - creating a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system. Swedish massage uses long sweeping and gliding stokes to illicit the relaxation response.
Medical massage therapy is the application of a specific treatment targeted to the specific problem(s) that has been diagnosed and prescribed by a physician. Upon visiting a medical massage therapist a thorough evaluation will be determined and from there, a medical massage treatment plan is instilled. A medical massage is any massage treatment used to treat the medical conditions of the patient. There is no specific technique that is qualified as a medical massage.
The original method of manual lymph drainage was developed by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife, Estrid Vodder ND, in the 1930's. MLD is a very light touch massage technique with gentle, skin-stretching movements. These movements transport the lymphatic fluid from your swollen areas in the direction of the lymph flow and in areas that are draining well. This repetitive motion encourages a larger volume of stagnant fluid (edema) to be removed. While MLD is helpful in reducing edema and scarring caused by trauma, surgery or chronic inflammation, it also assists in recovery from many other conditions and is an excellent esthetic and wellness therapy.
If you participate in sports as a professional, amateur, or weekend warrior, you are an athlete. If you workout at a gym, or exercise on your own, you are an athlete. Regular massage can help keep your muscles operating at optimum performance. Pre-event, post-event, and any time between, massage can benefit at any age or physical level.
Sports massage can be done before or after physical training. We focus on the belly of the muscles and the attachment sites to help increase range of motion and separate muscles fibers. Opening the muscle fibers helps to promote distribution of oxygen throughout the entire muscle, and flush waste products that interfere with muscle growth. The results are greater endurance, recovery, and the prevention of injury from warming up the muscle for repetitive use.
Cupping was documented in one of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, Ebers Papyrus, written in 1550 BC. In ancient times cupping was used to treat lung conditions like bronchitis and pneumonia. Today cupping is used to treat musculoskeletal injuries, such as strains, sprains, back injuries, and swelling. Silicone or plastic cups are placed on the skin, upside down. As the air in the cup is pumped out a vacuum is formed, causing the skin to raise and the blood vessels to dilate. During the cupping technique, cups may be slid over various regions of the body to elevate and separate tissue.
Massage therapy helps reduce stress and inflammation, while promoting relaxation. Our clients are able to physically and mentally relax, which improves their mental state and reduces depression and anxiety. Massage may also relieve high blood pressure often experienced during pregnancy, alleviating the musculoskeletal pain that the strain of pregnancy causes. This helps you prepare for birth by loosening your joints and muscles, leading to a shorter labor. Studies have shown that prenatal massage is helpful for both the mother and baby.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. Reiki is available in many hospitals across the county. Studies have shown Reiki may create feelings of peace, relaxation, security, and wellness.https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30948444/

Cupping therapy is a type of alternative medicine that can be traced back to ancient cultures like Chinese and Egyptian. The therapy works by placing cups made of glass, plastic, or silicone on the skin to create suction. The suction created helps mobilize and separate soft tissue in the body. Cupping may be combined with traditional massage or soft tissue work.

Dave Gassner LMT, MMT, CLT, has experience not only as a Licensed Massage Therapist but also as a patient. His interest in massage therapy started as a teen when he received massage while participating in sports. As an adult Dave sustained a low back and knee injury which crippled him for almost two years and required surgery. Even though he followed all the medical advice, Dave was not healing, and lacked the mobility and reduction in pain he was looking for.
Dave once again turned to massage therapy for help and became so involved in his treatment, he decided to attend the massage therapy program at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy in Newington, Connecticut. CCMT is considered one of the top accredited massage schools in the country.
After graduating from CCMT Dave continued his education and has earned his certification as a Master Myoskeletal Therapist, Certified Medical Massage Practitioner and Certified Lymphedema Therapist specializing in manual lymphatic drainage, and complete decongestive therapy. Dave has worked with professional sports teams from the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the National Lacrosse League (NLL) as well as high school and college athletes throughout Connecticut. Dave is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and the American Medical Massage Association (AMMA).
Dave‘s clinical approach and intuition has benefited many people. Clients come to him for sports maintenance, injury prevention, and injury recovery. Patients are referred to him for treatment of old injuries along with new ones. Dave believes many people just suffer through pain because their time is limited, or they are uncomfortable in a open setting with others watching their therapeutic recovery. Don’t suffer any longer. Allow us the privilege to assist you and get you back to optimum performance.
